Strontium iodide is an inorganic compound with the formula SrI2. It can be made by treating strontium carbonate with hydroiodic acid and it is commonly used as a source of iodine in medicine. Its crystals are colorless and hexagonal in shape and have a bitter, saline taste. It is soluble in water at room temperature and sparingly soluble in ethanol. It decomposes in moist air due to its deliquescence to form free iodine and strontium oxide. Europium-doped sri2 is used to make scintillation light for detecting gamma radiation and as a contrast enhancer in collodion emulsions [1]. For safety, a NIOSH-approved respirator should be worn when handling this compound.
