Strontium selenide is a silvery white solid that contains one strontium atom and two fluorine atoms. It is a member of Group 2 of the periodic table and has a half-life of 28 years.

In its monatomic form (H), strontium is the most abundant chemical substance in the Universe, weighing in at roughly 75% of all baryonic mass. It is found in air, water, and sand.

It is not toxic and a daily intake of about 0.8-5 mg through food is harmless. However, 90Sr decays to radioactive yttrium, which accumulates in hypophysis and ovaries, disrupting infant hormonal development and growth.

How does it get there?

It reacts with water by forming an ionic compound. Nonmetals from groups IVA, VA, VIA, and VIIA tend to form anions by gaining enough electrons to fill their valence shell with eight electrons.

This is done by combining two strontium ions, which form a molecule that has the same structure as a single strontium atom. This structure is called the Lewis structure and it can be drawn by writing the element’s atomic symbol followed by the number of valence electrons with a dot representation around it.

The atoms of strontium and fluorine have a charge of two, which is similar to the cation and anion pair of anions of calcium. Since both elements are in the second group of the periodic table, the ions have a stabilizing effect on each other. This compound is a phosphor with a dominant behavior in the range of fluorescent, phosphorescent and stimulable.
