Indium is a soft, ductile, malleable metallic element that has a low melting point. It is similar to gallium in that both metals readily wet glass and are liquid over a wide range of temperatures. Indium can be made into a low-melting alloy with gallium, which is useful in making windows for nuclear reactors. It also can be used to form a corrosion-resistant mirror surface for glass. It is a critical component of the semiconductor Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS) that is used in high-performing solar cells.
